Description

The scale is a useful tool to monitor general weight changes, but it doesn’t tell you the full picture! To gain deeper insights and a more comprehensive view, it is important to assess body composition.

Body composition is made up of the percentages of fat, bone, muscle, water and other tissues in the human body. When individuals are looking to improve their body composition or understand where it is currently at, the two key parameters to focus on is our fat mass and fat-free (lean) mass.

Fat mass represents the amount of fat tissue stored in the body, while fat-free/lean mass includes all other tissues such as your muscles, organs, bones and fluid.

Your lean body mass is calculated by subtracting your body fat weight from your total body weight. Keep in mind that your lean body mass isn’t your muscle mass alone; it includes all non-fat tissue in the body.

Understanding your body composition and looking beyond the scale can help to provide insights into your metabolic health, disease risk, athletic performance, body image, progress and overall quality of life.
